Tax-free & low-tax digital nomad visas

30 visas in our dataset carry a favourable or zero tax treatment of foreign-sourced income. Some are genuinely 0% (Barbados, the UAE, Anguilla, Cayman-style territories); some exempt foreign earnings while you hold the permit (Costa Rica, Croatia, Montenegro, Cape Verde); and some offer a flat or reduced rate rather than nothing (Spain's 24% Beckham regime, Greece's 50% exemption, Portugal's 20% IFICI). "Tax-free" rarely means "no tax anywhere" — this is general information, not tax advice.

Data as of June 2026.

Tax treatment is the most volatile and personal field on this site. Liability depends on tax residency (usually 183+ days), where your income arises, your citizenship and double-tax treaties. Verify with the national tax authority and a cross-border tax professional before relying on any figure here.

Frequently asked questions

Which digital nomad visas are tax-free on foreign income?

Several visas either explicitly exempt foreign-sourced income or are structured to avoid local tax residency: among the most clear-cut are Barbados (statutory exemption), Costa Rica (foreign income exempt under Law 10008), Croatia (foreign-salary exemption), the UAE (no personal income tax), Montenegro and Cape Verde (stated exemptions), and Mauritius/Anguilla/Bahamas/Montserrat (territorial or zero-tax). Spain, Greece, Portugal and Italy offer reduced flat-rate or partial-exemption regimes rather than 0%. Always verify with the national tax authority — "no income tax" rarely means "no tax".

Do I still owe tax at home if my nomad visa country is tax-free?

Possibly. US citizens are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live. Other nationalities may stay tax-resident at home until they break residency there. A 0% local rate does not cancel home-country or citizenship-based tax — get cross-border tax advice before assuming you owe nothing.
